Where should the sofa and TV go?

Put the TV on a wall that doesn't face a window, and the sofa straight across from it, at a distance that suits the screen size. Keep the walking path behind the sofa or to the side, never between the sofa and the screen.
Where the TV goes
- Not opposite a window: the screen reflects the light and you see glare.
- Not with a window behind it: your eyes fight the bright background.
- Best: on a wall at a right angle to the windows.
- Height: the centre of the screen at about eye level when seated, often around 100 to 110 cm from the floor.
- Plan sockets and cable routes before the walls are finished, so no wires show.
Where the sofa goes
- Facing the TV, centred on it if you can.
- Distance: a common rule is 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen diagonal. For a 55-inch TV (140 cm), that's about 2 to 3.5 m. With a sharp 4K screen you can sit a bit closer.
- Against a wall saves space in a small room.
- Floating in the room, with space behind, works in larger rooms and creates a path behind it.
When the TV isn't the focus
If you watch little TV, face the seating toward the view or each other. Place the TV on a side wall, or in a cabinet that closes. A living room built around conversation feels warmer.
Common mistakes
- TV mounted too high, above a fireplace or shelf.
- Sofa too far from the screen in a large room, leaving a gap in the middle.
- A path that crosses in front of the TV.
- Only one ceiling light, which reflects on the screen at night.
Try layouts before moving anything
A 3D plan lets you test the TV on two or three walls, check the window glare at different hours and see the sofa at its real size.
