What budget should I plan to decorate a home?

Several fabric samples in different colours

There's no single figure: it depends on the size of your home, what you keep and the quality you choose. The best approach is to list every room, set priorities and split the budget before buying anything. Keep 10 to 15% aside for the unexpected.

Step 1: list what you need

Go room by room and write down what's missing: furniture, lights, curtains, rugs, storage, decoration. Mark what you keep. This list is your real budget base.

Step 2: separate the three costs

  • Works: painting, floors, kitchen, bathroom, electricity. Usually the largest part if you renovate.
  • Furniture and lighting: the pieces you live with every day.
  • Decoration: textiles, art, plants, objects. Small items that add up quickly.

If you're renovating, see our page on renovation costs.

Step 3: set priorities

Spend more on what you use every day and what's hard to replace:

  • Sofa, bed and mattress.
  • Kitchen worktops and taps.
  • Lighting points and switches, which are set during the works.

Save on what's easy to change later: cushions, small tables, decoration and objects.

Step 4: buy in order

  1. Large pieces first: sofa, bed, dining table and wardrobes.
  2. Then lighting and curtains.
  3. Rugs and smaller furniture.
  4. Decoration last, once you've lived in the space a little.

Ways to stretch a budget

  • Keep good pieces and reupholster or repaint them.
  • Mix custom pieces where the space is awkward with standard pieces elsewhere.
  • Use local craft: Moroccan rugs, ceramics and woodwork often cost less than imported items of similar quality.
  • Decorate in stages, room by room.

Where design helps

A design fixes your list before you shop: the right sizes, colours and quantities. It prevents the most expensive mistake, buying something that doesn't fit. Our full-home design starts from 4,500 DH per floor, often less than the cost of one wrong sofa.
