Interior architect vs decorator: what's the difference?

An interior architect works on the space itself: the layout, partitions, lighting, kitchens and bathrooms. A decorator works on what goes into the space: colours, furniture, fabrics and objects. One changes how a room works, the other how it looks and feels.
What an interior architect does
- Redraws the layout: where walls, doors and storage go.
- Plans kitchens and bathrooms, including where water and electricity arrive.
- Designs lighting: where each light goes and what it does.
- Draws technical plans that contractors build from.
- Often follows the works on site.
What a decorator does
- Chooses colours, flooring, wallpaper and fabrics.
- Selects furniture, rugs, curtains, lights and objects.
- Builds a style that fits your taste and the way you live.
- Works with the room as it is, without moving walls.
Side by side
| Interior architect | Decorator | |
|---|---|---|
| Changes walls and layout | Yes | No |
| Kitchens and bathrooms | Plans them fully | Finishes and styling |
| Technical plans | Yes | Rarely |
| Furniture and colours | Yes | Yes, main focus |
| Typical project | Renovation, new apartment | Refresh, new furniture |
Which one do you need?
If you're moving walls, redoing a kitchen or bathroom, or starting from an empty apartment, you need someone who plans the space. If the layout works and you want a new look, a decorator is enough.
Where an interior designer fits
An interior designer covers both: the plan and the look. That's what we do. Every project starts with a floor plan and a moodboard, then 3D renders show the finished space. In Tangier, we can also carry out the works.
In Morocco, "interior architect" and "decorator" aren't protected titles the way "architect" is. Ask to see past projects, plans and renders before you choose.
